The Belt and Road Teenager Maker Camp & Teacher Workshop was debuted in Beijing

The Belt and Road Teenager Maker Camp & Teacher Workshop was debuted between 17th and 22nd of December, 2017 at Beijing No.35 High School campus. It was widely participated by elite young makers, science teachers, and officers of science and education administrations, all of which totaled nearly 120 people coming from 16 countries across 4 continents: Kazakhstan, Iran, India, Pakistan, Australia, Tunisia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Turkey, Thailand, Ukraine, and China. The theme is: Thinking & Making. As co-hosted by Department of International Cooperation of Ministry of Science and Technology(MOST) and Department of International Affairs of China Association of Science and Technology(CAST), the Belt and Road Teenager Maker Camp & Teacher Workshop was collaboratively organized by Children & Youth Science Center of CAST, China Association of Children's Science Instructors, Beijing No. 35 High School, Beijing Cernet Future Education Institute, and supported by InterAcademy Partnership-Science Education Program (IAP SEP), Economic Cooperation Organization Science Foundation (ECOSF), and Academy of Engineering and Technology for the Developing World (AETDEW).

The Belt and Road Teenager Maker Camp & Teacher Workshop organized series of science and education activities, all of which were remarkably engaging and highly relevant. On one hand, deputy professor Qin Zengchang of Beihang University delivered a keynote speech under the topic of: science education practices and AI---A personal story. This helped raise people’s horizon on the latest AI technologies and sparkled a brainstorm. On the other hand, students were arranged to visit 5 science labs at Beijing No.35 High School to learn and experience: bridge model design and making, model airplane design and making, intelligent robot study and application, microbiology study and application, 3-D print study and application. Students were highly mobilized and encouraged under the teamwork spirit, designing and creating various technologic, innovative, and applicable maker pieces. Apart from that, science teachers were invited to share practices in science education from their own countries. At the teacher workshop, teachers were divided in groups to create weather forecast devices.

During the off-session period, teachers and students were organized to visit China Science and Technology Museum for the latest science engagement experience, the Forbidden City for the ancient Chinese culture, as well as Nanluogu Lane for the unique Beijing’s lane culture. They participated in the Moon-fan making workshop and watched traditional Chinese acrobatics at Chaoyang Theatre. They were deeply impressed by all the activities which immersed them in the latest achievement of science education in China and the unique Beijing history and culture. Leaders of Ministry of Science and Technology, China Association for Science and Technology, and diplomats of related countries attended the opening ceremony of the camp.

The Belt and Road Teenager Maker Camp & Teacher Workshop was hosted by Ministry of Science and Technology and China Association for Science and Technology in honor of the guidelines of 19th Communist Party of China National Congress to promote the establishment of a community of shared future for mankind. The Belt and Road Teenager Maker Camp & Teacher Workshop is also a critical enabler to implement science and innovation collaboration that was derived from the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. Throughout the whole process, Ministry of Science and Technology and China Association for Science and Technology have faithfully beheld the idea of international cooperation in science and culture with countries covered by the Belt and Road Initiative, by providing a China solution to the establishment of a community of shared future for mankind. At the Belt and Road Teenager Maker Camp & Teacher Workshop, young makers and science educators developed a deeper understanding of the fast evolution in Chinese science field, and Chinese science education for youths was best demonstrated to the world. The idea of establishing cooperation platform for science education for youths was further explored, which has laid a sound foundation for solidifying China’s position in international cooperation for science education for youths.
