The 4th Nationwide Exhibition Event of Science Education Activities in Science Popularization Venues Successfully held

The 4th Nationwide Exhibition Event of Science Education Activities in Science Popularization Venues hosted by Children and Youth Science Center of CAST (CYSC), Chinese Association of National Science Museums (CANSM) and China Association of Children’s Science Instructors (CACSI) was successfully held in Suzhou Science and Technology Museum between Sep. 25th and 28th 2018.

Mr. Zhang Zhenwei Deputy Director General of CYSC, Mr. Li Xiaoliang Director General of CACSI and Mr. Xu Chunsheng Vice President of Jiangsu Association for Science and Technology (SAST) attended the awarding ceremony and presented the winners.

The event had received 198 projects from science and technology museums, natural science museums, professional technology museums, teenager science workshops, national science education bases, universities and research institutes, totaling up to 87 units nationwide. After the preliminary comparison, 72 projects from 60 science popularization museums were screened and selected to compete for the final and, in turn, fell naturally into two categories, i.e. the educational projects enlightening teenagers and the educational projects stretching the borders of knowledge.

Through displaying and questioning, it turns out to be 12 first prizes, 18 second prizes, 21 third prizes, and 21 excellence awards. Meanwhile, with an eye to underlining the guiding role of “bringing the science and technology museums into school” and highlighting the educational function of science and technology museums in schools, the host units, singled out a special prize out of all the 12 first prizes. The judging panel was consist of the professors and researchers from universities and the scientific and technical workers from science communication agencies and science communication museums.

All the educational projects participating in the event, no matter from science and technology museums, natural science museums, science communication educational bases or from the universities and research institutes, had fully capitalized on the resources advantage of their own resources. Featuring various forms and informative contents, numerous projects had their distinct educational characteristics of the extramural science communication museums. Especially when it comes to advocating scientific methods and spirits, these museums had come a long way. At the same time, the bridge and inextricable link between all kinds of educational activities in these museums and the curriculum standards in primary and middle schools had always been to the forefront of their attention. When communicating knowledge, they underscored the scientific exploring abilities, scientific thinking methods, scientific attitudes and comprehensive practical abilities.

Apart from displaying and questioning, there existed lots of bright spots highlighting the event. For the first time, 72 projects exhibited and performed experimentally, which not only staged a lively interesting educational experience, but also enabled all the participants to go further and interchange ideas in a targeted way. The high-quality education from different museums had broadened the participants’ horizon and meanwhile enriched the content of the exhibition and assessment conference as well.

The biennial exhibition and assessment conference is an inspection of the results of the educational projects of science communication museums and a platform of comparing views, learning from each other and making common progress between different museums. It ably and profitably sharpened the quality of the educational teams of science communication museums so as to explore high-quality public cultural products and magnetize teenagers to join in technological activities, and whereby meet the ever-increasing needs for scientific education from schools, families, and society.
