Bring Together Talent from Across the World and Join Hands to Build a Better Future——Highlights of the Third Belt and Road Teenager Maker Camp & Teacher Workshop

Jointly hosted by China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST) and the People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the 3rd Belt and Road Teenager Maker Camp & Teacher Workshop was held in Nanning, Guangxi on September 24-30. This grand event was organized by Children & Youth Science Center of CAST, China Association of Children's Science Instructors, Guangxi Association for Science and Technology, Department of Science and Technology of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Department of Education of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Nanning Municipal Government, supported by IAP SEP, ECO Science Foundation and Network of African Science Academies, and implemented by Guangxi Children & Youth Science Center, Guangxi Science and Technology Museum, Guangxi Adolescents Science and Technology Education Association, and Nanning No.2 Middle School. Actively echoed by Asian, European, African, American and Oceanian countries and regions along the "Belt and Road", this grand event attracted the participation of more than 300 young science enthusiasts, science teachers, representatives and high-ranking officials of science education administrations and organizations from 37 countries and regions as well as international organizations. Meanwhile, the heads of IAP, ECO Science Foundation and Network of African Science Academies were also invited to attend the opening ceremony and other relevant activities, all in an effort to build a grand networking event for young science enthusiasts and science educators.

A myriad of science, technology, culture and education exchange activities have been designed for the event of this year, including science education forum, annual meeting of BRISECC, student maker activities, teacher workshop, One Belt One Road Fusion of Civilization Curriculum demonstration, etc. In the meantime, "Guangxi Elements" were fully integrated into the science and culture visits. Through the cultural nights and visits to Guangxi Science and Technology Museum, Anthropology Museum of Guangxi and Fantawild Asian Legend, participants can learn more about the characteristics of Guangxi's scientific, technological and cultural resources, and these activities well contribute to the mutual exchanges between civilizations.

Young science enthusiasts from 33 countries and regions were divided into several groups to engage in talent show, group dance design and performance, robot relay competition and other activities. They enhanced mutual understanding and friendship through these relaxing and interesting activities.


Keynote Speeches to Help Explore the Mysteries of the Universe

On the morning of September 25th, the campers were impressed by the captivating culture of Zhuang ethnic group after watching two amazing shows: the Silk Flower Ball brought by Nanning Xiuxiang Primary School and the South Sea Pearls on the Silk Road brought by Nanning Peihong Ethnic Middle School. With the rotation of the silk flower ball which symbolized the opening of the event, the Third Belt and Road Teenager Maker Camp & Teacher Workshop kicked off officially. Highly expected by the campers, Wu Xiangping, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and researcher at the National Astronomical Observatories of CAS, delivered an appealing and exciting keynote speech titled "The Fate of the Universe", to help campers understand the basic characteristics of the universe, explore the origin of all things in the universe, learn about the dark matter and dark energy that determine the destiny of the universe, and embark on an interesting journey across the universe.

Join Hands and Exchange Scientific Insights

The maker activities carried out in groups were themed on intelligent robots, model art, printing art, colorful chemistry, model airplane, electronic art, video production and creative programming, and were jointly developed by Guangxi Children & Youth Science Center, Guangxi Science and Technology Museum and teachers from Nanning No. 2 Middle School. Each themed class divided participants into several teams, each with three members. The team members were students from different countries, regions and international organizations. The content of classes was very interesting and challenging. In addition to overcoming the difficulty in language communication, participants were required to work together to complete the assignments, which were than displayed and reviewed. During the event, experts from the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and Chinese science education experts jointly launched the STEAM classes for participating students. Such exchanges and practices enabled participants to enhance the awareness of international exchanges, to learn about different cultures and to exchange scientific insights, thereby contributing to the development of science education and science culture among adolescents in diverse countries.


Thematic exchanges to bolster educational exchanges and development

During the teacher workshop activities, the Science Teachers Association of Western Australia, SciClass, DF Robot and Chaihuo Makers jointly organized teacher workshops themed on STEM, design thinking, programming and maker for 87 science teachers coming from all parts of the world to participate in the Belt and Road Teenager Maker Camp. Through in-depth discussions and cooperation, this event achieved for the first time the in-depth cooperation between the science education organizations of different countries on the design of relevant activities, thereby promoting the exchange and sharing of science education achievements among countries along the "Belt and Road".


Education Forum to exchange educational experience and results

On the morning of September 26, the Belt and Road Science Education Forum was held at the Guangxi Science and Technology Museum. Nine representatives from eight countries including Costa Rica, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, Ukraine, Malaysia, Romania, Tunisia and China delivered speeches at the Forum, which was attended by over 200 teachers coming from various countries to participate in the Third Belt and Road Teenager Maker Camp & Teacher Workshop, as well as local science teachers in Nanning City. The Forum allowed participants to learn the methods and experience of different countries in science education.


Educational integration to exchange and share insights

During the event, the participants of Maker Camp and BRISECC members visited Nanning Binhu Road Primary School and the Gaotian Town Ethnics School in Yangshuo County, Guilin City to examine the implementation status of the “One Belt One Road Fusion of Civilization Curriculum ", and then went to Guilin Middle School Lingui Campus to watch the 4th Guangxi Adolescent Science and Technology Games. During the after-school interaction session, the BRISECC members gave high praise to the diversity of cultural integration curriculum activities carried out in Guangxi, to their ability in classroom control and to seamless design of all components. In an attempt to jointly promote the development of the "One Belt One Road Fusion of Civilization Curriculum" and facilitate the exchanges between Chinese and Western cultures, the committee members discussed the teaching methods and the problems encountered in the integration of Chinese and Western cultures.



The joyful and exciting Cultural Night

The Cultural Night was warmly welcomed by the participants, who spared no effort in displaying their captivating cultures, such as Indian song and dance, Omani candy, Korean dance group, Chinese folk dance, interactive games, etc. All these allowed students from all over the world to experience the collision and integration of different cultures. Every show or performance won the warm applause of all students, making Cultural Night a joyful and exciting event for all.

Refreshing visits to savor the glamour of Guangxi

It was the first time for this grand event to go out of Beijing and be held in Nanning, Guangxi, the hometown of Zhuang culture. Through cultural performances, visit to the ethnic museum, Cultural Night and other exciting activities which contributed to the exchanges and mutual learning between civilizations, students from all over the world had the opportunity to savor the glamour of the scientific, technological and cultural resources in Guangxi.


Little makers with big creations

In order to commend the winners and better promote the mutual learning and exchanges between the students, the Organizing Committee prepared the Best Maker Award, Best Presentation Award and Best Teamwork Award, while special awards were also granted for the first time by foreign counterparts (Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and Tunisian Association for the Future of Science and Technology). At the awarding ceremony, in addition to the joy brought by the awards, the students also enjoyed the brilliant performances of Lion Dance brought by Ningshi Xinlihua School and The Battle Song of the King brought by Nanning Yifu Primary School.

During the design session of the event, participants of respective activity groups overcame the language barriers and presented the research results to judges by looking up information, designing works and making self-made materials. These amazing works were clear in design, comprehensive in expression, and interesting and creative in appearance, making teachers and judges very pleased.


Building a platform to promote the development of science education along the "Belt and Road"

During the event, Children & Youth Science Center of CAST signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Tunisian Association for the Future of Science and Technology and the Academy of Engineering and Technology of the Developing World respectively. The 2019 Annual Meeting of the Belt and Road International Science Education Coordinating Committee (BRISECC) was held to review and approve the applications of the China Science and Technology Museum, The Cygnus Scientific Society-Centre for UNESCO and the Science Centre Singapore to join the Coordination Committee. The new members have added impetus into and broadened the influence of this platform, thereby further contributing to the sustainable development of science education along the "Belt and Road".


Science is the source of development and progress of the world, while creative talent are at the core of the development of science and technology. This event has strengthened the scientific and cultural exchanges between teenagers from all over the world, further guided, protected and stimulated the interest and imagination of teenagers for science, and highlighted, cultivated and enhanced the social status and professional skills of S&T professionals, thereby rejuvenating the science education along the Belt and Road, inspiring more outstanding talent with creative minds for the future, and contributing to the development of science education across the world.
